Terror-financing arrest for £150 payment to son

Terror-financing controversy: U.K. father arrested for sending £150 to son fighting with anti-IS Kurds

In the messy world of stopping the financing of terror, £150 can get you arrested. On Dec. 11, British authorities arrested Paul Newey at his home near Birmingham on the suspicion of financing terror.

Newey’s son, Daniel, had traveled to Syria in the late fall to fight with the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit, or YPG. The YPG was an ally of the U.S. military in the fight against ISIS. However, after the U.S. pulled out of northern Syria, Turkey initiated attacks against Kurdish forces in the region.

European nations have long wrestled with how to handle citizens who choose on their own to fight in the region. And authorities have previously charged parents and other relatives for giving financial support to family members allied with Islamic State terrorist fighters. The Kurdish YPG, however, fought against the Islamic State.

The changing politics and influences in northern Syria, however, have resulted in changed alliances. British authorities have now declared northern Syria as a “forbidden” region and have ordered their citizens not to travel or stay there.

Various British citizens have sharply criticized that abrupt turn-about. And even though YPG has not been named a terrorist group by the U.S. or the U.K., Newey’s arrest still occurred. Initial reports indicate that he was released on bail and has not yet been charged. Turkish authorities praised the arrest.
